Updated September 2026 · Colour-change film guide for UK owners and installers
Both products change the colour of a car. They are not the same material, they do not fail the same way, and they should not be quoted as if they were.
Quick verdict:
- Want colour plus real chip protection for 7–10 years? Colour PPF (TPU), such as TERMINAX Chroma-X™.
- Want a cheaper restyle for 3–5 years and accept vinyl limits? Vinyl wrap (PVC).
- Want factory paint protected with no colour change? Clear PPF, such as UltraNAX™ — not wrap.
What each product actually is
Vinyl wrap is a PVC film. It is designed to restyle. Typical thickness is about 3–4 mil. It stretches well, comes in thousands of colours and textures, and is usually cheaper and faster to fit. It is not built as a stone-chip shield. Colour PPF is a colour-change thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) film. TERMINAX Chroma-X™ is an 8-mil TPU with a colour layer, Crossfusion™ top-coat and Invisichannel™ adhesive. It is meant to look like a respray while behaving like paint protection film: self-healing, hydrophobic, impact-resistant, long warranty. If a quote says “colour wrap” but the installer means vinyl, ask them to name the material. PVC and TPU are different jobs.Head-to-head: Colour PPF vs vinyl wrap
| Factor | Vinyl wrap (PVC) | Colour PPF / Chroma-X™ (TPU) |
|---|---|---|
| Typical thickness | About 3–4 mil | About 8 mil |
| Main job | Colour change / graphics | Colour change + paint protection |
| Stone chips / gravel | Limited. Sharp impact can cut through | Designed to absorb and spread impact |
| Self-healing | No | Yes — light swirls relax with heat |
| Clarity / orange peel | Varies; cheap vinyl prints texture | High-clarity TPU if fitted clean |
| Gloss stability | Can dull, chalk or shrink | Top-coat holds gloss / satin longer |
| UK weather | Edges lift with wash, salt, freeze-thaw | Built for wet, grit and UV exposure |
| Typical life | 3–5 years (premium vinyl up to ~7) | 7–10 years with warranty (product dependent) |
| Removal | Usually removable; adhesive risk if aged | Removable when fitted correctly |
| Full-car UK price (2026) | Typically £2,000–£5,000 | Typically higher than vinyl; quote by car |
Which lasts longer in the UK?
Colour PPF lasts longer if the question is “how many British winters before it looks tired?” UK cars live with:- motorway chips on the M1 / M25 / M6
- winter salt and grit
- wet months and freeze-thaw
- automatic washes and poor wash technique
- UV in summer, not Arizona UV, but enough to age cheap PVC
Finish, clarity and gloss
Vinyl can look excellent on day one, particularly branded premium wraps. The gap appears later. Clarity: Colour PPF is built as an optical TPU stack. Good film stays deep and even. Cheap vinyl can show print texture, haze or a “plastic” surface under show lighting. Gloss / satin: Chroma-X™ is available in Mirror and Satin families (Pure, Metallic, Metallic Chrome). The top-coat is the same logic as clear PPF: hydrophobic and self-healing, not a thin vinyl lacquer. Colour shift: Chameleon and metallic colour PPF changes with light. That is a product feature, not a defect — see cars such as the Gravity Show GT3 RS in TERMINAX chameleon blue. Vinyl has shift prints too; they usually do not carry the same impact spec.Self-healing: the difference owners notice in month six
Vinyl scratches stay. Fine wash marks stay. You either live with them or wrap again. Colour PPF with a self-healing top-coat lets light swirls relax under warm water or sun. That is the ownership difference after the first winter of supermarket car parks and bad wash mitts. It will not heal a deep gouge or a stretched white mark from cold install. Those are fit or impact issues, not “self-heal will fix it”.Cost in the UK (2026)
Vinyl is cheaper to buy and faster to fit. That is why it still wins on price.| Job | Typical UK range (2026) |
|---|---|
| Full vinyl wrap | £2,000–£5,000 |
| Full clear PPF | £3,000–£6,500+ |
| Full colour PPF | Usually above a vinyl wrap on the same car; confirm film + labour |
- Vinyl at £3,000 over 4 years ≈ £750 / year, then you wrap again or live with fade.
- Colour PPF at a higher ticket over 8–10 years is often cheaper per year if the car is kept.
When vinyl is still the right call
- the car is short-term or going to auction soon
- you want a wild graphic, print or texture vinyl does better
- budget is fixed and colour PPF is out of reach
- the installer is a wrap specialist, not a PPF bay
When colour PPF is the right call
- new or high-value paint you still want to protect
- motorway miles and grit
- you want the car to look painted, not wrapped
- you will keep the car beyond three winters
- you want a transferable film warranty, not a wrap shop handshake
Installer notes (why some colour PPF jobs go white or lift)
Colour TPU is less forgiving than clear on stretch. Cold, repeated peel-and-stick on big curves can stress the colour layer. That is a process issue, not “all colour PPF fails”. Good practice:- warm the film before aggressive stretch
- place once on big radii; do not yank the whole panel off
- keep bay temperature sensible (about 20°C+)
- soft squeegee, low angle
- photograph any mark immediately — do not grind it with the blade
